My students have been appearing for Trinity College Grade Examinations regularly (with decent results). I encourage them to learn to Read music apart from doing English/Hindi songs. Reading Staff Notations again and again goes deep into mind which ultimately helps in improving student's music sense and becoming independent of the teacher.
