The first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India was Goa. After its liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961, Goa retained the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867, which applies uniformly to all communities, governing matters like marriage, divorce, and succession. Unlike the rest of India, where personal laws vary by religion, Goa's UCC ensures equal legal rights for all citizens.
